80fcecb13c [lldb] Replace assertEquals with assertEqual (NFC) (#82073)
assertEquals is a deprecated alias for assertEqual and has been removed
in Python 3.12. This wasn't an issue previously because we used a
vendored version of the unittest module. Now that we use the built-in
version this gets updated together with the Python version used to run
the test suite.

dad50fefa2 Add extra printing to TestWatchpointCount.py to debug CI fail
The way the locals are laid out on the stack on x86-64 Debian is
resulting in a test failure with the new large watchpoint support.
Collecting more logging before I revert/debug it.

4a43ee08e7 Re-enable StepOverWatchpoint test, make it more focused
This is my second recent change to TestStepOverWatchpoint.py,
the first was to change the two global variables it is watching
from 'char' to 'long' so they're more likely to be on separate
words/doublewords of memory that can be watched indepdently.

I believe this removes the need for the MIPS and S390X skips.

The test was testing a combination of read and write watchpoints,
stepping over a function that hits them, and then instruction stepping
over a source line which hits them.  But previously it was
always starting with the read watchpoint in both of them, it
didn't test the instruction-stepping for the read watchpoint.

I now have to tests in TestStepOverWatchpoint.py, one which
runs to the read-watchpoint function, sets that watchpoint,
steps over another function which reads from that global, then
instruction steps over a source line that reads from that global.

The second test runs to the write-watchpoint function, sets that
watchpoint.  Steps over another function which writes to that
global, then instruction steps over a source line that writes to
that global.

These are both xfailed on Darwin systems because watchpoints and
hardware breakpoints are currently disabled by the kernel when
instruction stepping.

35e3939cb0 watch set expression's default type was wrong with new modify type
`watch set expression` was passing the OptionGroupWatchpoint enum
in to Target where the LLDB_WATCH_TYPE_* bitfield was expected.
Modify matched READ|WRITE and resulted in a test failure in
TestWatchTaggedAddress.py.  David temporarily changed the test to
expect this incorrect output; this fixes the bug and updates the
test case to test it for correctness again.

This reverts commit a7b78cac9a.

With updates to the tests.

TestWatchTaggedAddress.py: Updated the expected watchpoint types,
though I'm not sure there should be a differnt default for the two
ways of setting them, that needs to be confirmed.

TestStepOverWatchpoint.py: Skipped this everywhere because I think
what used to happen is you couldn't put 2 watchpoints on the same
address (after alignment). I guess that this is now allowed because
modify watchpoints aren't accounted for, but likely should be.
Needs investigating.

933ad5c897 [lldb] Add 'modify' type watchpoints, make it default (#66308)
Watchpoints in lldb can be either 'read', 'write', or 'read/write'. This
is exposing the actual behavior of hardware watchpoints. gdb has a
different behavior: a "write" type watchpoint only stops when the
watched memory region *changes*.

A user is using a watchpoint for one of three reasons:

1. Want to find what is changing/corrupting this memory.
2. Want to find what is writing to this memory.
3. Want to find what is reading from this memory.

I believe (1) is the most common use case for watchpoints, and it
currently can't be done in lldb -- the user needs to continue every time
the same value is written to the watched-memory manually. I think gdb's
behavior is the correct one. There are some use cases where a developer
wants to find every function that writes/reads to/from a memory region,
regardless of value, I want to still allow that functionality.

This is also a bit of groundwork for my large watchpoint support
proposal

where I will be adding support for AArch64 MASK watchpoints which watch
power-of-2 memory regions. A user might ask to watch 24 bytes, and a
MASK watchpoint stub can do this with a 32-byte MASK watchpoint if it is

that watched region, and not show those hits to the user.

This patch adds a new 'modify' watchpoint type and it is the default.

Re-landing this patch after addressing testsuite failures found in CI on
Linux, Intel machines, and windows.

8e76093ae8 [lldb][AArch64] Fix tagged watch test on Graviton 3
During __do_global_dtors_aux glibc sets a flag that is right
next to the global variable. This is done using a store byte.

On QEMU the watchpoints are handled with a finer granularity
than real hardware, so this wasn't a problem. On Graviton 3
(and Mountain Jade, though this test won't run there) watchpoints
look at larger chunks of memory.

This means that the final continue actually stops in  __do_global_dtors_aux
instead of exiting.

We could fix this by padding the global to be away from the flag,
but that is fiddly and it is easier just to remove the watchpoint
before the final continue. We have already verified it worked by that
point.

2238dcc393 [NFC][Py Reformat] Reformat python files in lldb
This is an ongoing series of commits that are reformatting our Python
code. Reformatting is done with `black` (23.1.0).

If you end up having problems merging this commit because you have made
changes to a python file, the best way to handle that is to run `git
checkout --ours <yourfile>` and then reformat it with black.

e76cfaca70 AArch64 debugserver parse ESR register for watchpoints
Have debugserver parse the watchpoint flags out of the exception
syndrome register when we get a watchpoint mach exception.  Relay
those fields up to lldb in the stop reply packet, if the watchpoint
number was reported by the hardware, use the address from that as
the watchpoint address.

Change how watchpoints are reported to lldb from using the mach
exception data, to using the `reason:watchpoint` and `description:asciihex`
method that lldb-server uses, which can relay the actual trap address
as well as the address of a watched memory region responsible for
the trap, so lldb can step past it.

Have debugserver look for the nearest watchpoint that it has set
when it gets a watchpoint trap, so accesses that are reported as
starting before the watched region are associated with the correct
watchpoint to lldb.  Add a test case for this specific issue.

c1e4a0d4db Follow on to 2c7abc83f6.
I didn't refactor the test that's failing on arm64 correctly so it
failed everywhere.

Looks like the step test passes on other aarch64 systems as well as
Darwin.  Turn off the xfail and see how far that gets.

8d024a79ea Fix a problem with "watchpoint triggers before" watchpoint handling.
We need to step the watchpoint instruction in these cases, but the
when we queued the ThreadPlanStepOverWatchpoint to do this, we didn't
make it a Controlling plan.  So if you are stepping, this plan returns as
though it were a utility plan, and the stepping plan keeps going.

This only partially fixes the problem on Darwin; there's another bug
with reporting a watchpoint when we're instruction single stepping over
an instruction that triggers a watchpoint.  The kernel reports the
"single step completed" but not the watchpoint hit.  So this commit
also refactors the test into a part that works (at least on Darwin) and
a part that still fails.

We may have to adjust the test result expectations for other systems after
this fix.

When setting a variable watchpoint, the watchpoint stores the variable
name in the watchpoint spec. For expression variables we should store
the expression in the watchpoint spec. This patch adds that
functionality.

9a9fce1fed [lldb] Fix {break,watch}point command function stopping behaviour
In order to run a {break,watch}point command, lldb can resolve to the
script interpreter to run an arbitrary piece of code or call into a
user-provided function. To do so, we will generate a wrapping function,
where we first copy lldb's internal dictionary keys into the
interpreter's global dictionary, copied inline the user code before
resetting the global dictionary to its previous state.

However, {break,watch}point commands can optionally return a value that
would tell lldb whether we should stop or not. This feature was
only implemented for breakpoint commands and since we inlined the user
code directly into the wrapping function, introducing an early return,
that caused lldb to let the interpreter global dictionary tinted with the
internal dictionary keys.

This patch fixes that issue while also adding the stopping behaviour to
watchpoint commands.

To do so, this patch refactors the {break,watch}point command creation
method, to let the lldb wrapper function generator know if the user code is
a function call or a arbitrary expression.

Then the wrapper generator, if the user input was a function call, the
wrapper function will call the user function and save the return value into
a variable. If the user input was an arbitrary expression, the wrapper  will
inline it into a nested function, call the nested function and save the
return value into the same variable. After resetting the interpreter global
dictionary to its previous state, the generated wrapper function will return
the varible containing the return value.

0948f1cf81 Reapply the commits to enable accurate hit-count detection for watchpoints.
This commit combines the initial commit (7c240de609af), a fix for x86_64 Linux
(3a0581501e76) and a fix for thinko in a last minute rewrite that I really
should have run the testsuite on.

Also, make sure that all the "I need to step over watchpoint" plans execute
before we call a public stop.  Otherwise, e.g. if you have N watchpoints and
a Signal, the signal stop info will get us to stop with the watchpoints in a
half-done state.

unexpected stop reason. This is similar to the assertState helper that
was added in ce825e4674.

Before:

  self.assertEqual(stop_reason, lldb.eStopReasonInstrumentation)

After:

  self.assertStopReason(stop_reason, lldb.eStopReasonInstrumentation)
  AssertionError: signal (5) != instrumentation (10)

5778ada8e5 Make hit point counts reliable for architectures that stop before evaluation.
Since we want to present the "new & old" values for watchpoint hits, on architectures,
including the ARM family, that stop before the triggering instruction is run, we need
to single step over the instruction before stopping for realz.  This was incorrectly
done directly in the StopInfoWatchpoint::ShouldStop.  That causes problems if more than
one thread stops "for a reason" at the same time as the watchpoint, since the other actions
didn't expect the process to make progress in this part of the execution control machinery.

The correct way to do this is to schedule the step over using ThreadPlans, and then to restore
the stop info after that plan stops, so that the rest of the stop info actions can happen when
all the other threads have handled their immediate actions as well.

c1b07d6177 Have CommandObjectParsed check for "commands that take no arguments".
This is currently being done in an ad hoc way, and so for some
commands it isn't being checked.  We have the info to make this check,
since commands are supposed to add their arguments to the m_arguments
field of the CommandObject.  This change uses that info to check whether
the command received arguments in error.

A handful of commands weren't defining their argument types, I also had
to fix them.  And a bunch of commands were checking for arguments by
hand, so I removed those checks in favor of the CommandObject one.  That
also meant I had to change some tests that were checking for the ad hoc
error outputs.

ce825e4674 [lldb] Add assertState function to the API test suite
Add a function to make it easier to debug a test failure caused by an
unexpected state.

Currently, tests are using assertEqual which results in a cryptic error
message: "AssertionError: 5 != 10". Even when a test provides a message
to make it clear why a particular state is expected, you still have to
figure out which of the two was the expected state, and what the other
value corresponds to.

We have a function in lldbutil that helps you convert the state number
into a user readable string. This patch adds a wrapper around
assertEqual specifically for comparing states and reporting better error
messages.

The aforementioned error message now looks like this: "AssertionError:
stopped (5) != exited (10)". If the user provided a message, that
continues to get printed as well.

bef4da4a6a Skip testing of watchpoint hit-count/ignore-count on multithreaded
Skip all watchpoint hit-count/ignore-count tests for multithreaded
API tests for now on arm64 Darwin.

On AArch64, insns that trigger a WP are rolled back and we are
notified.  lldb needs to disable the WP, insn step, re-enable it,
then report it to the user.  lldb only does this full step action
for the "selected thread", and so when a program stops with
multiple threads hitting a stop reason, some of them watchpoints,
any non-selected-thread will not be completed in this way.  But
all threads with the initial watchpoint exception will have their
hit-count/ignore-counts updated.  When we resume execution, the
other threads sitting at the instruction will again execute &
trigger the WP exceptoin again, repeating until we've gone through
all of the threads.

This bug is being tracked in llvm.org/pr49433 and inside apple
in rdar://93863107

779bbbf27f [lldb] Replace asserts on .Success() with assertSuccess()
Replace forms of `assertTrue(err.Success())` with `assertSuccess(err)` (added in D82759).

* `assertSuccess` prints out the error's message
* `assertSuccess` expresses explicit higher level semantics, both to the reader and for test failure output
* `assertSuccess` seems not to be well known, using it where possible will help spread knowledge
* `assertSuccess` statements are more succinct

5e6aabd48e Support AArch64/Linux watchpoint on tagged addresses
AArch64 architecture support virtual addresses with some of the top bits ignored.
These ignored bits can host memory tags or bit masks that can serve to check for
authentication of address integrity. We need to clear away the top ignored bits
from watchpoint address to reliably hit and set watchpoints on addresses
containing tags or masks in their top bits.

This patch adds support to watch tagged addresses on AArch64/Linux.

54c2687292 [lldb] Introduce createTestTarget for creating a valid target in API tests
At the moment nearly every test calls something similar to
`self.dbg.CreateTarget(self.getBuildArtifact("a.out"))` and them sometimes
checks if the created target is actually valid with something like
`self.assertTrue(target.IsValid(), "some useless text")`.

Beside being really verbose the error messages generated by this pattern are
always just indicating that the target failed to be created but now why.

This patch introduces a helper function `createTestTarget` to our Test class
that creates the target with the much more verbose `CreateTarget` overload that
gives us back an SBError (with a fancy error). If the target couldn't be created
the function prints out the SBError that LLDB returned and asserts for us. It
also defaults to the "a.out" build artifact path that nearly all tests are using
to avoid to hardcode "a.out" in every test.

I converted a bunch of tests to the new function but I'll do the rest of the
test suite as follow ups.
